When Fiction Is Used as Propaganda in the Classroom

“”Early in August 2005, a parent of a 10th grade high school student contacted me about a problematic novel on her son’s AP Honors English Reading List. Although I had never addressed the question of novels assigned as recommended or required reading in the classroom, I promised that I would look at the book and its place on her son’s English reading list and then decide how to approach the issue. Simply put, my decision to review this book guided me into the uncharted waters of critiquing works of fiction assigned to augment materials in textbooks and used as tools of propaganda and/or proselytization.”
